What happens to your instrument
after collection

What happens to the instrument after collection is not a matter of residual waste: a piano consists of wood, a cast-iron frame, steel strings, felt and leather. We dismantle it professionally and feed the materials separately into the recycling cycle.

Metal parts such as the cast-iron frame and strings go to scrap recyclers and are melted down; suitable wood is reused as chipboard or biomass. Electronic components from digital pianos are sent separately for electronics recycling – with a certificate on request.

Frequently asked questions
about piano disposal

Disposing of a piano – what does that mean? +
Disposing of a piano is a logistical and technical challenge, as pianos are among the heaviest and most complex items of furniture. A piano often weighs over 200 kg, making it heavier than most furniture. Pianos also contain various materials (wood, metal, felt and sometimes electronics), some of which must be disposed of or recycled carefully. Below you will find frequently asked questions and answers about professional piano disposal – for private individuals as well as business customers.
When should a piano be disposed of? +
A badly damaged, unplayable piano is often only a case for disposal. In general, you should consider disposing of a piano when repair or tuning is no longer worthwhile and the instrument becomes practically unplayable. Very old pianos in particular (often over ~100 years old) frequently lose their musical value – they are not automatically valuable just because they are old. Such instruments often have at most sentimental value for the owner, but the substance (action, soundboard, etc.) is so worn that even experts do not recommend restoration. At the latest when there is major damage, cracks or irreplaceable worn parts, or when the piano has been neglected for decades, disposal is usually the most sensible route. In such cases the cost of a repair exceeds the benefit. Note: as long as a piano is playable and in reasonable condition, you can of course try to find a new owner (for example via classified ads or among friends). Realistically, however, this only works for well-preserved instruments.
How much does it cost to dispose of a piano? +
The cost of piano disposal can vary depending on the situation. Typically, however, prices are in the range of a few hundred euros. How high the price is in an individual case depends on several factors: • Accessibility: is the piano on the ground floor, or does it have to be carried down from the 5th floor without a lift? The more floors and the more difficult the route, the greater the effort. • Weight and size: a small spinet is easier to handle than a large concert grand. Very heavy instruments require more staff or special equipment. • Distance: the distance from the piano’s location to the disposal facility is included in the calculation. Regional differences (city vs. countryside) can also play a role. • Disposal fees: landfills or recycling centres may charge fees per kilogram or per item.
What happens to the piano after disposal (environmental aspects)? +
With professional disposal, the piano is dismantled and the various materials are recycled wherever possible. A piano consists essentially of wood, metal, some felt/leather and possibly plastics. Wherever possible, these materials go back into the recycling cycle. Metal parts – especially the large cast-iron/steel frame and the steel strings – are processed by scrap recyclers and melted down so that new metal products can be made from them. Wooden parts (case, soundboard) are often glued or varnished and cannot be recycled directly. Suitable wood is partly reused as chipboard or biomass/firewood; unusable remains are incinerated in waste-to-energy plants to generate energy. Felt and leather from the action are generally not recyclable and are disposed of as residual waste or recovered thermally. If the piano contains electrical/electronic components (e.g. an integrated tuning module, loudspeakers or, in the case of electric pianos, entire circuit boards), these parts must be sent separately for electronics recycling. The same applies to any batteries or rechargeable batteries in digital pianos. Specialist companies take care of the proper separation of these components so that all statutory disposal obligations are met.
