Frequently asked questions
about piano & grand piano transport

What is the difference between transporting an upright piano and a grand piano? +
Transporting an upright piano differs from transporting a grand piano mainly in the size and handling of the instrument. Upright pianos stand vertically and are more compact, whereas grand pianos are considerably larger, heavier and extend horizontally. Transporting a grand piano therefore takes more effort: it is usually laid on its side, and its legs and pedal lyre have to be removed before transport. An upright piano, on the other hand, stays in one piece and, thanks to its upright shape, is often easier to manoeuvre through doors and stairwells. Overall, transporting a grand piano is more involved (more carriers, special equipment) and can be more expensive than a standard upright piano transport.
Does a piano need to be tuned before transport? +
No, you do not need to tune your piano before transport. The move and the changed climatic conditions (fluctuations in temperature and humidity) usually put the instrument out of tune during transport anyway. You should therefore have it tuned only after transport at the destination, ideally after it has stood there for one to two weeks to acclimatise. This ensures the piano has adapted to its new surroundings and the tuning then remains stable.
What insurance options are there for grand piano and piano transports? +
You should make sure you have adequate insurance cover. As a rule, the carrier’s statutory basic liability applies first: in Germany this covers damage up to around 620 euros per cubic metre, and only for damage caused by the carrier. In addition, professional piano carriers usually offer transport insurance. This extends the protection and also covers the full value of high-quality instruments, even in the event of unforeseeable incidents such as theft or severe weather. Especially for a valuable instrument it is advisable to take out this additional insurance.
Are there special requirements for transporting antique pianos? +
Yes, transporting antique pianos requires special care. In very old pianos and grand pianos, materials such as wood, varnish and the action are often more delicate or brittle. Such antique instruments must therefore be handled gently and packed with extensive padding to avoid damage. Don’t worry – we are familiar with handling historical instruments. Special requirements may also apply to particularly valuable or listed pieces: if the piano contains ivory keys, for example, or is classified as a cultural asset, official permits may be required for transport – especially for international transports. Transport insurance is also advisable, as antique pianos often have a very high sentimental and material value.
How does an international piano transport with customs clearance work? +
An international transport with customs clearance essentially works as follows: • Preparation and packing: the piano is packed securely for transport (with blankets, film and, if necessary, in a special transport frame or crate). At the same time we prepare all necessary customs documents – e.g. export declarations, invoices stating the value and any permits. • Transport to the destination country: the shipment then travels to the destination country – by truck, ship or plane depending on distance and urgency. We organise the transport and make sure all papers accompany the shipment. • Customs clearance: on arrival in the destination country, our forwarding team (or a customs agent) handles customs clearance. The piano is declared to customs, the prepared documents are presented and any import duties or tariffs are paid. • Delivery and set-up: after customs release, the piano is delivered to the final address, unpacked and placed where you want it. Afterwards the piano should be given some time to acclimatise before it is tuned.
